Andy Masters gave a brief report on the results of the 1st and 2nd teams in the Edinburgh and Lothians League for the 1995-1996 season. The 1st team, finished second in the premier division while the 2nd team did less well coming last in the 1st division, a unique achievment having accomplished this feat two years in a row.

A motion was put forward to enter a 3rd team into the League next year at a cost of approximately £ 30. There was some concern expressed on the ability of the club to provide enough players for such a team. However, it was thought that a 3rd team would provide an opportunity for the less strong players, many of whom join the club at the beginning of the session, but then leave. A vote by hands was unanimous in favour of the motion.

Several other ideas for next year were discussed including a blitz competition at the start and end of each term, a 'buzzer' competition (time limit per a move) and the possibility of starting up a Club Championship - to which Andy Masters said he would draw up a paper explaining how one might work. It was generally agreed that for all these schemes a balance must be struck to accommodate those who want to play friendly or competitive chess games, 5 minutes to hour time limits.

It was announced that the match against St. Andrews would be played on 26th May. Steve O'Sullivan apologised for the postponement of the match, and hoped that by playing on the 26th a president would be initiated for an annual event, and a visit to St. Andrews would be organized for next year.

The meeting was formerly closed by the outgoing president. On behalf of all the club's members I would like to thank Steve, Andy, Robin and all the other members of the 1995-1996 committee for all their hard work, and I look forward to what looks to be a promising new season.
